Why does the news media use a lower case "g" for Gypsy?
I live in an area where there are a lot of gypsies (and lots of settled gypsies who have integrated with the community and are not a problem). The reputation that gypsies have has been created by their own hard work. I am well aware that Gypsies consider there to be a world of difference between themselves and gypsies (or tinkers) but the difference is indistinguishable to the wider community. Gypsies and gypsies largely live outside mainstream society and separate themselves from it, they do not pay tax, I have never known them to remove their rubbish when they leave a temporary site and they seem to operate beyond the laws the rest of us have to observe., In addition, I have had belongings stolen by gypsies (don't know whether its a big g or a small one) on several occions. My perception of gypsies or Gypsies as a whole is perpetuated by their behaviour not my prejudice. My experience of gypsies and Gypsies is that they are opportunists - playing the race discrimination card is just another opportunity. There is actually a gypsy (or Gypsy I don't know) camp right in the heart of town and those people live happily side by side with the rest of the community. The two communities do not mix (lagely the choice of the g or G) but there is no discrimination on either side. They still live in caravans and they have been there for several gfenerations now.
