I think my bird is going to lay an egg!?
If she's laying on the bottom of the cage a great deal and shredding up materials for nesting, then she's probably going to lay an egg or eggs. Provide your society finch with some healthy food at this time such as millet, canary gr seed, cuttlebone, eggfood to help it stay healthy and lay the egg. If your female hasn't mated and is laying an infertile egg, keep the egg in the cage for a few weeks. If you take the egg (s) out, it will encourage the finch to keep laying them. This can cause a chronic egg layer and the finch may become egg bound. Society finches will nest about anywhere and aren't picky about a nesting site. You can offer dry gr as nesting material. If your finch has mated, it will lay anywhere from 4-8 eggs and incubate them from 12-14 days. Most babies fledge in 2-4 weeks. I ume you know for sure that your society finch is a female. You can't tell the just by looking at them. Males are the singers.
