What is a recommended heater for my car?

We have a 1991 volkswagen vanagon, and we are looking for a reliable heater that either runs off propane or runs on very low battery power. But we are open to other opinions. We need something that can handle a trip through high elevations, humid conditions, below zero areas etc. Any suggestions?
